Areas of Engagement

As a coach, I neither diagnose nor provide treatment. That is an important distinction between coaching and therapy. In my experience coaching others, I have worked with people that have one or more diagnosable conditions as well as those who do not. I prefer not to use commonly used labels for a couple reasons: to distinguish that I am not a therapist, to avoid more deeply wiring narratives and in recognition of the shame people tend to feel when carrying those labels. In our work together, there is no therapy, there are no rigid constructs, there is no labeling. There is presence, mindful communication, and the use of reality, your own senses and experiences as tools to assist you on your journey.

Maladaptive Coping
Mechanisms

Alcohol, addictions and eating disorders are examples of highly maladaptive coping mechanisms that are life threatening. Building and maintaining a solid foundation of support and adaptive, healthy tools are vital to long term growth and balance in life. My experience working with clients, and my own journey, have shown me that the root of the problems stemming from over use of a substance are not just about the substance but the thoughts and narratives about the substance.

This is not to say that dependence on substances and abuse of subtances are not real, they are. This is to say that even when abstaining from the substance the underlying thoughts and beliefs that led a person to believe that the use of the substance was a helpful tool are still present. Uncovering those, sometimes hidden, thoughts and beliefs is necessary. Otherwise, the underlying thoughts can lead to another form of maladaptive coping. This is why we focus on developing adaptive tools to help clients reach their objectives.

Over Thinking &
Perfectionism

Over thinking, distorted thinking, catastrophic thinking and perfectionism are also forms of maladaptive coping mechanisms that can be mild and make decision making difficult or can be severe and debilitating. At the very minimum, these types of thought constructs are painfully negative and can leave us feeling overwhelmed and engaging in self-sabotaging or self-destructive actions.

Thoughts, which may have originated as an attempt to help ourselves, over time have become rigid, rapid and create intense emotions. I learned to see that my own over thinking, distorted thinking, catastrophic thinking and perfectionism were ingrained in me as tools to protect myself. My mind really believed it was keeping me safe from potential harm from others. The mechanisms were maladaptive and ultimately harmful. Changing them is possible.

Spiritual
Discovery

Spiritual discovery is the core of exploration and connection to Your You. The journey is to self-awareness, presence, and developing your inner wise guide, inner strength, sense of purpose, your intuition and inner caretaker. Each of us has an innate need to be connected to our inner self.

The need to be connected to self is a human need as basic as the needs for breath, hydration, sleep, basic nutrition, shelter, safety and connection to others. Developing your awareness of thought patterns, unconscious beliefs, adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms helps you to build that connection to the inner self, to Your You.
